The writer demonstrates a strong sense of the distinction between marketing and news writing and uses this knowledge to create content that inspires interest among prospective students, promotes alumni and donor support, and builds awareness and pride across the College community.
As necessary, the writer applies these strong writing and editing skills to develop news stories and short features for the College website and other vehicles.
The Marketing Writer develops meaningful positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and others across the College community, including building content and source developments worthy of sharing with the wider Lafayette readership; continually seeks out and proposes interesting and fresh angles for marketing content and news stories; and adeptly creates content well-suited to the medium of publication, whether admissions or development print collaterals, web content, video storyboards, the alumni magazine, and more.
The Marketing Writer plays an important role in supporting division objectives, inspiring the best work from colleagues, ensuring the sound and effective integration of written and visual assets for maximum audience engagement, and extending Lafayette's reach and reputation through the division's comprehensive communications and marketing work.
Specific responsibilities include the following:
1.
Contribute in multiple ways as an integral member of a communications team dedicated to fulfilling College goals consistent with Lafayette's communications and marketing strategy and the highest standards of higher education outreach and engagement.
2.
Working closely with division colleagues, develop focused marketing strategies that capitalize on the team's talents in writing, photography, videography, web design, graphics design, and social media to foster integrated media approaches that most effectively inspire audience interest and action.
3.
Create original and compelling content for marketing to admissions and development audiences across an array of print and digital platforms.
4.
Working closely with division colleagues and the Office of Admissions, build rolling plans for segmenting and testing communications to explore promising content approaches, track results, and continually adapt content to maximize admissions audience responses.
5.
Propose and pursue news and short-feature story leads and ideas, especially for website publication, that advance the College's mission and goals and the division's integrated communications approach.
6.
Working closely with division colleagues and in the respective partner offices, stay abreast through research of the evolving content preferences and interests of admissions and donor/alumni audiences.
7.
When appropriate to the division's goals and responsibilities, assist academic and administrative departments in developing marketing strategies that advance Lafayette's outreach to critical external audiences.
8.
Perform other marketing and writing assignments that shape the College's reputation and service to its many constituencies and can be used in diverse formats.
9.
Ensure the accuracy of all facts and data used in all content generated.
10.
Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have:
1.
Bachelor's degree in a field requiring extensive writing.
2.
Five years of full-time professional marketing experience, ideally including at least two years of relevant full-time experience in higher education.
3.
Excellent writing, editing, grammar, and research skills, with proven ability to generate exceptional writing for marketing and short-feature purposes and for the web.
4.
Demonstrated professional capacity to identify and capitalize upon original opportunities for research and data-mining to advance admissions and other external outreach.
5.
Proven success applying multi-purpose marketing knowledge, such as, for example, through direct mail, e-mail and other digital communications, SEO, and Google analytics.
6.
Exceptional oral and written communication skills and the ability to work well with diverse colleagues in a complex and fast-paced environment.
7.
Demonstrated skill creatively and effectively recommending and applying fresh approaches to content for digital, print, social media, and emerging communications formats.
8.
Proven ability to evaluate, synthesize, and incorporate ideas and feedback from multiple stakeholders and handle such exchanges with tact and diplomacy.
9.
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines with strong creativity and analysis while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
10.
Ability to deliver high-quality work in other related professional areas as needed.
